Everything Freezes

I don’t try to hide the fact that I’m not a fan of cold weather.  I’ll tolerate it if I’m bundled up and prepared.  I have bad news for you.  Locks are the same…especially padlocks!  They’re sitting on the outside of (usually unheated) buildings or on gates.  Completely exposed to the elements.

I’m entering into my 21st year of being a full time security solutions provider.  That means 20+ winters of customer feedback regarding padlocks…most of it is contradicting!!

All winter long, I have customers coming in telling two types of similar stories.

Customer 1 tells me: “This is an awesome padlock!  It never freezes!”
Customer 2 tells me: “This padlock is terrible! I carry a torch and my key all winter long!”

Same padlock…opposing stories.  How can this be?

The answer is simple.  It’s all how you treat the lock when the weather hits and what you do if (and when) it does freeze.

  1. Prevention
    • Cover the lock with a physical barrier to keep it out of the elements
    • Spray the lock and its internals with a water repelling fluid
      • We sell Lock Saver which keeps water from settling in the components
  2. Solution – For when it does freeze
    • Warm up the lock
      • Putting a torch or lighter to the lock will get it open.  Putting it right back will only let it freeze back up again.  You need to do more…
    • Dry out the lock
      • Allow the lock ample time to dry and get the moisture out otherwise it’ll just freeze up again
    • Displace the moisture
      • WD-40!  Honestly!  WD = Water Displacement – It gets any remaining moisture out of the crevices and lubricates the lock.

I’ve used this simple process for years to get customers into their homes and gates.  I don’t believe there is anything on the planet that is completely freeze proof.  We can’t control the weather.  We can just better prepare for it.

Who’s at your door?

Online shopping is on the rise.  Eight out of ten Canadians now shop online.  I’m not here to talk about your shopping habits.  I’m here to discuss the pickup of those deliveries.

How many home deliveries do you think are made in a year?

According to Canada Post, they delivered 900,000 a day during the “slow” summer of 2015. (Report) That rate is increasing on an annual basis.  They now routinely have Million Parcel Mondays.  That’s where Canada Post will deliver a million or more parcels in a single day.  It’s on Mondays because of the surge in weekend shopping online.

But what about all of those deliveries?  What if they don’t require a signature?  They’ll sit on your front step or hanging out of your mailbox until you get home.  It’s wonderfully convenient for you….and the bad guys.

Here are a few quick tips you can use to make sure that new shirt is still there when you get home.

  • Have the packages delivered to your office or somewhere you trust.
  • Get a PO box and pick up all of your mail there.
  • Install a camera that’s motion activated so you get notified when someone is near the door.

My family and I use all three of these methods.  Our favorite is the doorbell camera.  It serves double duty because we know when someone rings the doorbell, can chat with the person at the door, and even unlock it…RIGHT FROM OUR PHONES!!  It also notifies us if someone is just lingering around at the bottom of the stairs.  Of course we sell it, so I like it.
